Description

WORKSHOP LEADERS:

  • Kelly O'Shea
  • Chris Vicevich
DESCRIPTION:

We want our students to do more than just apply a set of procedures. How do they develop the skills to be able to identify and solve new problems? Journal writing can help. Writing about one’s process makes reflection an explicit activity, gives students a chance to revisit a problem they found especially challenging, and opens a different avenue for feedback and conversation.

In this workshop, we look to share the experience of reflective journaling by using problems accessible (yet challenging!) to science and math teachers. Participants will first interact with a set of problems, work in small groups, and practice some whiteboarding discourse. Then, everyone will get the chance to write their own journals as they reflect on their process and experience with one of the problems. We will share the journals that we write in the workshop and see journals written by students in high school math and physics classes.

WHO SHOULD COME TO THIS WORKSHOP?
  • Interested current or future math and science teachers who teach grades 7-12

CAPACITY: limited to 30 participants.

PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEO RECORDINGS.
We take photographs and record video of our workshops in order to publicize a positive image of science, science teaching, and science teachers, as well as of the STEMteachersNYC organization - a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity. If you register, you are agreeing to be photographed and to have your voice and image video-recorded. You are also agreeing to relinquish your rights to the photographs and video recordings. If you do not wish to be photographed or video-recorded, you must inform us when you check in at the beginning of the workshop. We will take one photograph of your face so that we can erase your image if we happen to catch it by chance during the workshop, and we will do our best to avoid you. We will also appreciate your cooperation in positioning yourself in a location where the camera can avoid you while still including as many of the other participants as possible.
